One of the joys of my work is being able to consult with business leaders, CEOs and business owners.
As an independent consultant I get to be the ‘challenger’ – I can have the straight conversation; the contrarian view and the ‘tell it how it is’ insights. I don’t need to be concerned about offending the boss.
Therefore I often counsel on the following; If you are a business leader, I urge you to be unpredictable.
A few years ago Jason Robinson, a mesmerising English rugby player, was interviewed and the interviewer asked him about how do defenders effectively defend against his elusive footwork and side stepping prowess.
His response (and I paraphrase), “ I feel sorry for defenders because there is no way they can predict what I am going to do next. The reason being is that even I don’t know what I am about to do!”
Very unpredictable – very effective.
Business leaders and sales leaders;
Schedule time to step away from the grind, get into a creative head space, think disruptively. Come up with unpredictable models of business.
Sidestep the competition.
